I think it was probably the most insane Sovereign Academy party ever.
The venue was bursting, hundreds of neon kids, day-glo as far as they eye could see.
This time round the host venue was the Capitol Theatre in Pretoria, just off Church Square. There is no way to describe how epic that place is. When I did get a chance to get some photos it was too late, everybody was already far to merry and I simply cannot remember the events of the evening. This means all went well.
The following pictures are just some interesting ones I could actually use, even those Pretoria kids didn’t go as hardcore as I thought they would.
I got to the venue just after 11pm, there was a massive accident on the N1 to Pretoria which caused half of the punters from Joburg to get stuck in mad traffic for hours (including Johnny, who according to Ben, sat in the traffic for 5 hours). Doors only opened at 9pm instead of 8.30, but it picked up pretty quickly, I had to push my way through the crowd to get to the stage so Dan and I could play.
What I do remember was a kick ass set from Johnny Neon (complete with amazing new visuals to accompany them), the glowstick onslaught that followed (every single person waving them all over the place) and some brilliant opening sets from Data Takashi, King of Town and Sassquatch (who did a one-on-one, as I recall). Kidofdoom followed getting everyone worked up into a frantic stupor. An insanely well played set by S-track and a free-for-all near the end of the night were some fantastic highlights. I’m afraid I may have to gather reports back from as many people as I can and post them up, by the stage the bands were over it just got so intense that I was far too drunk to do anything.
I apologise, but if you missed out, you suck.
Fuck yeah, Sovereign Neon! See you all in Cape Town.
PS - Thanks to Janine Van Schoor and Matt Suttner for extra photos. I'll upload more as soon as they start to appear.
(Apologies for the quality of some of them, I warned you about the intensity of the evening.)
